ALBUM REVIEW: NEAV, ELEGY
Released when artist NEAV was 18 years old, this astounding debut album is an elegy to her past selves as she transitions into adulthood.
It's dark, dramatic, cinematic pop, full of electronica and a touch of folk.
Silence Song begins with an almost folk-like guitar, then the big heavy bass kicks in and we're undoubtedly in dark pop territory, with a Billie Eilish-style bass and voice combo - a great contrast to the folky verses. And there really is a bit of everything, as the track finishes with piano.

Tragic Drama brings us more folky verses, along with catchy electronic pre-choruses, and a big pop chorus. The lyrics evoke a feeling of both looking back and moving on at the same time.
A slowing of pace with Talking to the Devil, accompanied by subtle electronic sounds, make this an understated ballad that grows on you with every listen.
The intermittent sounds throughout most of Built the Same are beautifully contrasted with smooth flowing pre-choruses. Contrast is one thing this whole album does with expertise.

Then we have a brief Interlude which is the artist's note to self that they've noticed a tendency to try and fix people - and it doesn't make them feel good.
There's a lot going on in To Love, a break up song in the form of a love letter. Some may be overwhelmed by all the sounds, but if you're a fan of Flume, you'll absolutely love this song.

Deep heavy piano chords befitting an elegy are perfect for concluding track Say Goodbye, as the artist literally says goodbye to her past selves.
‘Say goodbye with no regrets’ is the parting line. The message is clear: refection is complete, it's time to move on.
