Posthumous album honours artist's life and music

Family, friends, and fellow artists of the late Thomas James Mahony have worked together to complete and release his final body of work according to his wishes.

Recently released album The Other Side is the final collection of music the Sydney artist intended to put into the world. Messages prior to Mahony's death by suicide in August 2024 detailed how he wanted the project to be completed and released, and over the past two years those closest to him have honoured his wishes by bringing the project to life.

Mahony played piano from a young age and went on to study at the Conservatorium of Music. He built on this classical foundation to create a sound that sat somewhere between alternative, indie singer-songwriter and indie soul.

The posthumously-released album is accompanied by an animated video clip for the track I Used To, created by Mahony's friend and fellow artist Keegan Barrie (known professionally as Menarku').

Barrie spent four months drawing and storyboarding the clip, after which Benjamin Marquad brought the images to life.

‘A lot of time, care and love went into creating this world for Tommy’s music,’ Barrie says.

‘I think it’s important, especially for artists to be able to continue to share their dreams and passions to the world after they are gone,' he says.

‘This project was brought to life for Tom by his friends and family.’
