A Song for the Earth is a lyrical novel in verse written by an environmental scientist and designed to offer a hopeful perspective on the climate crisis.

Our narrator January leaves her unfulfilling job in the soulless city to embark on a journey around the world and a search for meaning.

Her first stop is the rainforest, where she meets new friends and tells them she is there ‘to find the world again, because I am not sure it exists anymore in that place made up of so much concrete.’

She soon learns that the forest is imperiled, trees felled ‘for factories, and farming space, and for fires that ravage the land.’ 

Feeling helpless to effect any change, she puts pen to paper, vowing that ‘I will write a song for the forest’ before she moves on.

She travels through the desert and over the oceans, seeing firsthand the devastating effects modern humans are having on the earth.

She travels to the arctic and to the African savannah, always writing poems that begin with despair but end with hope.

On her return to the city, she rallies together with the voices of others, leaving the reader with a strong sense of hope and agency in the face of such enormous challenges.
