BOOK REVIEW: The Disappearing Season, by Cienna Collins

Georgia Wright is on the run from an abusive relationship, fleeing Melbourne for Far North Queensland. She's got a new phone number, her sister on her side, and she's determined her ex Andreas will never find her again.

A local agency helps her to find work as a live-in nanny for an affluent household - the recently-divorced Daniel Moretti and his daughter Reilly.

Georgia finds herself settling in well, developing a good relationship with Reilly and with the housekeeper Margie.

Then the text messages begin.

There is a fantastic build of suspense throughout the book as we sense Andreas drawing closer to finding Georgia. At the same time, Cyclone Yasi is building and threatening the entire area.

As if that weren't enough to deal with, Daniel's ex-wife has taken a dislike to Georgia and is taking delight in making her life difficult.

There are hints of a romance, and someone has betrayed Georgia's trust - but who?

In a heart-stopping climax, Georgia must fight for her own survival as well as protecting young Reilly who she has come to love.

This is both a thrilling story and a nuanced exploration of how difficult it can be to escape domestic abuse.
